Artis Zoo could be essentially translated as half historical reference and half present symbol of the Dutch culture. As the oldest zoo in Holland, Artis Zoo offers visitors some of the 19th century's flavor, the time it was build, throughout some of the symbols of that time: two grandiose statues representing two powerful eagles at the entrance, winding paths and old big trees in the gardens and valuable sculptures and architecture maintaining the trend of the 19th century. The zoo becomes, thus, an atmosphere of veridical trip in time for guests all around the world brought here by thirst of knowledge.

Since 1838, the year it was open, Artis Zoo has served as the most spectacular home of over 700 animal species and 200 tree sorts brought from all over the Globe, some of them in danger of extinction. European as well as exotic varieties make out of Artis Zoo one of the most popular sights for tourists and a valuable human treasure in the same time.

Men of science and guests alike refer to Artis as a successful miniature of our beautiful and mysterious planet. The major similarity between the two is precisely the identical five- element structure: the Artis Zoo is actually the unitary name for an Aquarium, various Botanical Gardens, a Zoological Museum, a Planetarium and a Geological Museum.

The Aquarium area answers visitors' curiosity regarding the livings in the Amsterdam canals and much more. Strange, old and adapted species, as well as the way they interact can be lively studied and observed by everyone.

The Botanical Gardens are the large universe of plants, trees and flowers gathered from all around the world, even the most exotic places. It becomes interesting to see how they adapt and survive and, of course, how science can help them do it.

The Zoological museum hosts exponents from early 19th century till present time and holds many exhibitions of an unique character in Europe and even the rest of the world. A true zoological history is waiting for you to be uncovered.

The Geological Museum and the Planetarium are maybe the most interesting sights, especially for curious children to begin to understand what are we made of and how did our planet appear. They will find here their greatest teacher, as nothing compares to the insights in Earth's ancient life taken in Artis Zoo. Artis Zoo is not only an ooze of calm and pure nature in the middle of a town that never sleeps, but also the most entertaining means of learning and an unforgettable experience irrespective of your age!
