Oude Kerk has always been an ambitious plan, no matter what
we may refer at. From its initial building project to the
ones following, from its original purpose of a spiritual home
to what it has turn into- "the living room of the city",
or considering the magnitude of each of its restorations.
First build in the 13th century, Oude Kerk is placed in that
part of Amsterdam from where the city began to spread its
territory to how we know it now. Oude Kerk is, thus, often
referred to as an ooze of calm and serenity anticipating the
tremor and frenetic spirit of the Red Light District.
Oude Kerk was reopened in 1975, after 24 years of assiduous
restoration and became the cultural heart of Amsterdam and
the home of concerts, exhibitions, private ceremonies and
events. The church's historical inheritance is outstanding.
Its past is clinging to names like Rembrandt and his wife
and shelters the graves of anonym Dutch citizen as well as
important figures in world's culture.
The specific charming atmosphere offered by the medieval
architecture next to the stained-glass Mary-windows dating
from mid-16th century and the notorious Vater-Muller organ
make out of Oude Kerk one of the symbols of Amsterdam and
most visited sights around.
Oude Kerk is open from Monday to Saturday from 11a.m. till
5p.m. and Sundays from 1p.m.till 5p.m. On Christmas and New
Year's Day, Oude Kerk cannot be visited.
