Dam Square has been the witness of most changes in the
history of Amsterdam and Holland itself. From the dark ages
of military conflict and destruction to the hippy decades
and present time, Dam Square has succeeded blend generations
in a unique manner. This is its very own source of value
and richness.
Dam Square dates back from the 13th century, when a dam
was built on the Amstel meant to keep the Zuiderzee Sea
away from the city. Its actual name, Dam Square, is due
to the hippies coming in the square in the 1960's. Dam Square
is now the place of an intense social life, with many sophisticated
restaurants, relaxed cafés and bars, boutiques and
jewelry stores.
This is the favorite place for tourists to take a breath
from so much visiting, for street performers to practice
their talents and for more eager people to do their shopping
or cheat chat with friends in a bar.
Regardless of the moment of the day, you can never be lonely
in the Dam Square. There is a permanent rumor day and night.
The only difficulty you may experience is not knowing what
to do first. We recommend you to start by visiting the Royal
Palace, once the official royal residence, now the location
of most important official ceremonies, private or cultural
events. However, before visiting it, you should check if
it opens, as the Royal Palace is sometimes closed for public
visitation.
Dam Square is also the home of the National Memorial statue.
That is one of the most famous monuments raised in honor
of the Dutch victims in the World War II, due to the controversy
surrounding it. Visiting Dam Square also means visiting
the world famous Madame Tussaud's wax museum and take pictures
with your favorite political or entertaining characters-
only waxed.
There are some important events going on in the Dam Square
along the year. Spring, for instance, is the month of carnivals
in Amsterdam. On May, 4th Rememberance Day is celebrated
at the National Monument and then in the square with silent
moments in honor of the dead soldiers and fighters against
the Nazis. Various festivals, such as Holland Festival or
Amsterdam Roots Festival, may occur here, like many other
important events (Queen's Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day,
New Year's Eve etc.).
And if want you are looking for is to avoid all the noise
of the city, we can only recommend you the same Dam Square.
It incredibly combines and offers nerve and tranquility,
modernism and tradition.
