I've always eaten at the Argentine steakhouse just off Spui, a half-block from the Waterstones bookstore. Can't remember the name -- it's been 3 1/2 years since I was last in A'dam. Will definitely seek out Toro Dorado next time I'm in town.

Toro Dorado Restaurant
Looking for the best steak in Amsterdam? Then look no further than than Toro Dorado.
When I visited the city for the first time, I didn't exactly expect to find the best steak I would ever eat during my visit. But after a wander around the city, you'll see that South American steakhouses are all over the place— there are no shortage of places to have a great steak. But if you order correctly, Toro Dorado is the best steakhouse in the city … and for me, the best Ive ever tried.
Sure, the decor is a little cheesy, and when you compare the prices on the menu to the appearance of the restaurant, you might be a little disappointed. But once you taste the food, you'll know you made the right choice.
Funnily enough, though practically all of the steakhouses in Amsterdam (including Toro Dorado) are South American, what makes Toro Dorado special is the Japanese beef. If you've never tried Wagyu beef, you're in for a treat. Wagyu is one of the most exclusive kinds of beef in the world. Imported from Japan, every cut of Wagyu Kobe beef is marked with origin and quality— and Toro Dorado only gets the best.
If you want to try a Wagyu steak, get ready to pay an arm and a leg for it. A 180 gram (6 oz) Wagyu tenderloin will run you 54 euros. A 200 gram Rib Eye or Sirloin will cost you 55 euros. Even a simple rump steak is 45 euros. But these steaks are worth every cent.
In addition to wonderful (if expensive) steaks, Toro Dorado also has some wonderful starters, such as the Langostinos a la Cazuela, and desserts. Don't forget to ask for chimichurri with your steak— this sauce is to die for.

recrec on "Are all drugs legal in Amsterdam or just marijuana?"

No drugs are legal in Amsterdam, except the 2 most toxic, dangerous, habitforming ones, and they are Alchol and Tabaccco.

Marijuana/Hashish and some Mushrooms are 'tolerated' and sold in special shops. It is the perculiar Dutch thing 'Legal but not Legal' known as 'Gedoen' (I think the spelling may,or may not be correct). It is legal/decriminalised in the front door but not in the back. But even this is a misnomer, because you can still be arrested for even small amounts of 'soft drugs,' the Dutch just do not enforce the law, but they could if they wanted too.

This is where the self 'righteous' rightwingers/religous crowd of America and elsewhere (including the Nederlands) get it totally wrong when portraying Holland as the Legal Drug capital of Europe. In fact their drug problem is far less than anywhere else in the world! You just have to deal in FACTS rather than misleading/dissinformation that is propergated by the 'holier than thou' crowd with America leading the imfamous anti-drug pack.

You have to understand/know History to come to the realisation as to why the 'Drug Crusaders' so hate 'Hemp' in particular, since it would put a lot of the ruling classes (American in particular) billionares out of business overnight if Cannabis was ever legalised and became an industry in itself. The 'Industrialisation' of Cannabis would pose a severe threat to the 'Petro-Chemical, Timber Barons, Pharmacutical, and many other entities if it were ever made legal.

Hence the insane ongoing 'Drug War' led by America on an exclusivley, unusually useful plant, for no apparent scientific/medical reason. Even their own (American)(numerous) commissioned scientific reports have exonerated Marijuana, making it far less dangerous than both tabacco and alchol...but these have either been hurriedly buried, or discounted with 'blinkered' hysteria being the order of the day!

BTW Prostitution only became legal in Holland 8 years ago, under strict guidelines.

Conclusion

Drugs of any kind, except Tabacco and Alchol are all illegal in Holland. So go tell the idiotic media in America and elsewhere the TRUTH...if they can handle it!

PS CANNABIS SHOULD BE RE-LEGALISED (once upon a time it was) all over the world. May the 'canker worms' eat the stinking flesh of those who in their financial self-interest have destroyed countless lives worldwide by this outrageous law enforcement against a harmless weed...a scientifically and medically proven one.

Hi,

Ive just come back from spending a few weeks in Amsterdam and feel like ive gotten to know the place pretty good. I just went by mywelf but still had fun cos all the peopel are v firendly, perhaps due to the high amount of weed that people smoke! lol

Anyway, I was renting a small apartment which was perfect for me with a company called Holistay, you can check their site on this lnk http://www.holistay.com/netherlands/ Its v easy to use and you get a good amount of space for your money! I would recommend this to anyone looking for somewhere they can rent in the 'Dam! Apart from checking this sites out I would reccommend any potential Amsterdam visitors to go on the official site of Amsterdam http://www.holland.com/amsterdam/ and if you can speak Dutch this is great too! http://www.holland.com/amsterdam/nl/

All in all Id say hotel is better than a boat, unless you're the adventurous type! Hope that's good for you! Enjoy the 'DAM!!! x

I'm an experienced traveler but am thinking of taking my first big trip alone...who knows for how long! I'm living by the seat of my pants right now....any suggestions on the ability to room up/hostel/meeting new friends, etc. for this adventure?? I'm experienced in all other areas of this area but would like to take a few weeks/months to ponder life. Any suggestions? Thanks!

It is better to use your credit card or ATM with Visa/MC logo. Be sure you have a four digit pin number. Buy Euro at home, just enough to pay for things you can use your car to pay for - tram tickets, snacks, taxi, etc. Don't bother with traveler's checks if you have a card. Just keep your card safe. Take phone numbers to reach organizations just in case you lose a card.

Using your ATM with a MC or Visa logo is actually cheaper. I exchange an amount that seems appropriate for things I can't use my card to pay for; taxis, snacks, trams. Then I use my card. It really is better, especially with the weak dollar. It's usually best to change money at home, rather than there.

What do you know about exchange money in Amsterdam? I know that in big tourists cities the conversion rates are lousy and if you use your card at ATMs you get higher fees.
