Grolsch is the best-tasting, IMHO. There's a place near Dam, on the Niewe side, that serves Belgian trappist monk ale. Very worthwhile. Wish I had more detail -- might do a google search.

Hi there,
I'm wondering if anyone would be able to give some advice on gigging in Amsterdam. We will touring Europe next May and woul love to play somewhere in Amsterdam. We play indie/pop (you can hear us at www.myspace.com/landlovers). Can anyone reccomend a nice venue (not too big) or a promoter who might be able to get us a gig with a local band?

Hi guys,
my name is Stephanie and I'm from Germany but right now I'm living in Amsterdam for 3 months to do an internship. Well of course I'm also here to see new things and to make memorable experiences. Maybe some of you could help me while giving me tips what I shouldn't miss because I'm here for the first time? I'm a student so I can't spend a lot of money and that's why I would prefer some cheap insider tips =)
On the internet I've found a website named discountamsterdam.net offering 20 % discount on several attractions. That's a really good advantage to me because some sights can be expensive.
So I would be glad about getting some answers from you!

Hey guys,

I went to Amsterdam this past weekend and got a great deal on all the different attractions there. Normally Amsterdam is kind of expensive and I was never able to afford this amazing city. Then a friend of mine told me about Discountamsterdam. It features almost all the different attractions in London and you can save up to 20% when using this system. All I had to do was to go to the website: www.discountamsterdam.net/ and print out the different codes for all the attractions I wanted to see. That way my weekend in Amsterdam got a whole lot cheaper and I could even do some shopping ;-)

This a great tip if you want to save some money and still do a lot of sightseeing. I also found out that they offer the same for London, New York and Germany. So I might be able to use it on one of my next trips too!

Hey,
I'll be traveling to Amsterdam in the summer to study for one month. I'm a musician, and ideally I'd like to find somewhere where I can rent a studio to practice in.
Also, where would you all recommend looking for accommodation? I know about craigslist, but I was wondering of there's something else out there that's good.
Thanks!

September 20, 13:00 at Zaal100 5 Euros
Come spend a sunny* afternoon at Zaal100 listening to some of the most aphrodisiac free improvisations you can stand without exploding!!! This concert was organized with very short notice to take advantage of a brilliant trio of musicians from San Francisco that sometimes go by the name Soft Teeth. They are finishing a European tour with Håvard Skaset & Guro Skumsnes Moe creating the Bay/Oslo Mirror Trio. Their schedule was so busy they only had one afternoon in Amsterdam but we were fortunate enough to find a venue happy to accommodate them (thanks Zaal100)!
Ava Mendoza: Guitar
Tony Dryer: Bass
Jacob Felix Heule: Drums(San Francisco)
+
John Dikeman: Saxophone(USA/NL)
-----
Core of the Coalman aka Jorge Boehringer(USA/Prague)
-----
Dirk Bruinsma: Sax
Renato Ferreira: Sax
Mike Majkowski: Bass
Wim Janssen: Drums(NL, BR, AU)
-----
Ava Mendoza is one of the most exciting young guitarists in the USA. She has worked with musicians ranging from Anthony Braxton and Fred Frith to Carla Bozulich and Malcolm Goldstein. She is also a member of the scathing rock band Mute Socialite as well as the renowned free improvisation quartet JUS. She can tie a cherry stem into a knot with only the use of her tongue and will do it live for the right price.

Tony Dryer has played bass guitar and toured extensively with rock groups including the Flying Luttenbachers, the Cold War, and Usurp Synapse. In recent years he has focused his attention on the acoustic double bass, and has recently completed a solo tour of the US supporting Ettrick.

Jacob Felix Heule is an improvising drummer and multi-instrumentalist whose music spans the spectrum from overwhelming brutality to reductionist austerity. Free improv, noise, black metal and gamelan all have influenced his aesthetic and technique. Collaborators over the years include Jack Wright, Weasel Walter, James Plotkin, Moe! Staiano and many more....

Yes, I also believe those numbers are correct. I believe you are allowed to possess more than 5g (I heard up to 100g) of ready-to-smoke marijuana in your home (along with up to 6 plants), but the tolerated amount to carry on your person while out of the home is 5g.

I'm thinking by now Matty has already made is trip to Amsterdam. But for those of you reading this today, I would recommend a spring time visit. The weather can be cool, but its not cold. Wear layers. In April and May you can make a day trip to the Keukenhof and see a fantastic display of flowers with some trippy Dutch artwork throughout. Even if flowers aren't your thing, spring is great there. As soon as it gets the slightest bit warm outdoor seating becomes available for restaurants and coffeeshops alike. It is fabulous. November is cold, cold, cold. I'm from So.California so that makes a difference, but it was COLD! Whenever you go, have fun!

There is a big cheese shop right when you enter the Red Light District. If you go from Dam Square to Red light you can not miss it/smell it.
Gouda is very good, dairies in Holland are all very good but I do not know if you can bring it in US.

Its not as in Finland. The prices are normal for a Western Europe capital. You can get beer in pubs starting from 2 Euros, I am talking about pints.
I do not think that its worth it to bring your own alcohol in Amsterdam.
