Things to avoid
The smoking in trains and train stations is forbidden
Avoid walking along the bicycle lanes even if the side walks may be sometimes narrow
Avoid walking trough Nieuwendijk, the Southern end of Zeedijjk, the streets off and the Damrak at night. Amstardam is considered a safe city however the respective areas are considered unsafe
Do not take any pictures in the Red Light District.
Do not take pictures in coffee shops.
Do not buy drugs on the streets form dealers that will approaches you. Stay away from people that will try to sell you ecstasy, cocaine and any other illegal drugs on the streets of Amsterdam.

Watch your valuables. Amsterdam is a safe city but as in all the big and crowded cities full of tourists you may have the unfortunate to meet with pickpockets. Keep the money into a money belt, in front of you.

Things to do:

Do a night boat cruise on the vivid and romantic Amsterdam Canals.
Visit the Red Light District by night, is not that scary as you may think and is quite safe.
Drink a fresh cup of coffee in the morning on Rembrandtplein.
Try the Dutch beer, its strong and fresh. Visit one of the many breweries in Amsterdam. The
beer is quite strong and very good.
Visit the Artis Zoo and go to the aquariums, Flamingo birds and PLEASE do not miss the Ice
Bear.
Visit Vondelpark and see the tulips.
Hang around Dam square and do nothing.
Visit the Flower Market and buy tulip bulbs to take home.
Take a night off, visit a coffee shop, relax and enjoy the top quality Dutch marijuana.

Things to know:

During weekdays almost everything closes at 01 AM. You may find yourself with out any possibility of buying any water, snacks or food. Be prepared and do little shopping by day
You can rent a bike and do the Amsterdam tour on. There are special bicycle lanes that will allow you to see almost any major sights in Amsterdam.

Book a hotel in advance. Is very difficult to find a room in Amsterdam on a short notice. Almost all hotels have no vacancies during the weekends.

You will find very friendly people in Amsterdam. The personal in restaurants and bars is very friendly. The usual tip in Amsterdam in 10% and is not added to the bill.
